Cheap Digital Television

Since my initial article appeared on How to View Digital Television, I’ve received numerous emails asking how to get cheap digital television. A 00 52″ HDTV, a 0 HDTV receiver, and a high gain directional antenna can add up pretty quickly – not to mention installation costs! I realize not everyone has 00 to drop on the latest and greatest HDTV components. Here, then, is a quick-and-easy guide to receiving HDTV signals without dropping a large chunk of change on new toys; here, then, is a quick-and-easy guide to getting cheap digital television.

Minimum Digital Television RequirementsAs you may recall from my last article, How to View Digital Television, you need at a minimum three items to watch and enjoy free over-the-air (OTA) HDTV:

1. An HDTV Television2. An HDTV Receiver3. An antenna of some sort

Whether you have the latest and greatest HDTV components, or you’re considering getting cheap digital television, you’ll need a piece of hardware from each category above.

Chances are, you already own one or more analog television sets. If you could somehow convert those free HDTV signals that your analog television can’t receive into an analog signal that your analog television can receive, you would then be able to watch the converted HDTV signal. A digital-to-analog converter box? Does such a piece of technology exist? See the next section!

If you’ve been watching free over-the-air analog broadcasts (which have been around since the invention of television), you probably also already own an antenna of some sort. Your antenna may be as simple as a set of “rabbit ears” that connect directly to the back of your television (many new televisions come with such an antenna). Or, your antenna may be a larger external roof or mast-mounted antenna. Regardless, you will need an antenna.

Of course, the converted channels will not have the exact same clear, crisp, high definition video and audio quality associated with HDTV. However, with a quality HDTV to analog conversion box, the signal would be the best analog signal you could possibly receive. This means you would still receive a crisp, clear picture on your analog television, compared to what you may be used to viewing with over-the-air analog broadcasts, cable television, or satellite-based television signals.

Minimum Cheap Digital Television RequirementsRemember those three items above you need to watch and enjoy free over-the-air (OTA) HDTV? Well, here’s what you’ll need at an absolute minimum for “cheap digital television”:

A television. Any working television will do. For this article, it is presumed that you are using an existing analog television.

A Digital-to-Analog Converter Box.A digital-to-analog converter box takes free, over-the-air digital broadcast signals and converts them into crisp, clear signals your analog television can display. A quality converter box, such as the RCA DTA800 Digital to Analog TV Converter Box, provides a quality, converted HDTV stream at a very economical cost.

Although there are only a few of these converter boxes currently on the market, as we approach the February 17, 2009 deadline for the end of analog television, more and more converter boxes will appear. In addition, our government (US) will be offering a converter box coupon worth approximately towards the purchase of one of these converter boxes beginning 1/1/2008 to the general public.

An Antenna.If you don’t already have an antenna, you will need one to receive free, over-the-air digital television.
